About

I am Dr Gary Christopher, a researcher, psychologist, and author with over a decade of experience studying the psychology of nostalgia and its role in emotional well-being, particularly in later life.

My work sits at the intersection of psychology, ageing, and care, exploring how nostalgia functions not as mere sentimentality but as a powerful psychological resource. Through my research, I have argued consistently that nostalgia and reminiscence are distinct phenomena, and that conflating them has led the care sector to undervalue one of the most accessible and effective tools available for supporting emotional well-being in people living with dementia and other conditions of later life.

I am the founder of AERIAL — Achieving Emotional Resilience in Later Life — a research initiative dedicated to advancing the evidence base for nostalgia-based approaches in care. Through AERIAL I develop research, resources, and practical tools for care professionals, families, and organisations working with older adults.
